Alpe D'Huez is one of France's top 5 alpine high altitude resorts and boasts an excellent snow record and extended season. It is renowned for its sunshine record and spectacular views of the Ecrins National Park mountains. The lift system of Alpe D'Huez is amongst the most modern in Europe and there is excellent skiing for all abilities. For beginners the lower slopes surrounding Alpe D'Huez provide confidence boosting green and blue runs. Intermediates will find miles of interesting blue and challenging reds with fantastic excursions to the satellite villages. The advanced skier will find some of the most testing terrain in France from the top of Pic Blanc at 330m, including the "Sarenne" - the longest black run in Europe. The Sarenne glacier which is accessed from the top of Pic Blanc was improved last season with the installation of two 4 man chairs. This now provides a snow-sure environment for 5 months. (New lift to glacier giving greater access due 2004/2005 season) LES DEUX ALPES AND LA GRAVE - within easy reach of Alpe D'Huez are 2 other fabulous ski resorts. Les Deux Alpe boasts the largest glacier in Europe with some excellent skiing for all abilities. La Grave is for the serious and not faint hearted. It is for those wishing to explore some of the best off piste terrain in the world. Both resorts are within 30 minutes drive of Bourg D'Oisans. For non-skiers there is a large outdoor swimming pool and indoor pool, a fully equipped sports centre with tennis and squash courts, aerobics, table tennis, golf, rock climbing and many other activities. There is also an Olympic sized ice rink, more than 40 restaurants and numerous bars and night-clubs. In the Summer a stage of the Tour de France takes place up the mountain. The main town is Bourg d'Oisans which lies at the base of the valley and although very old in appearance is a thriving town and serves all the 6 surrounding mountain resorts.
